We work to the UK's construction industry standard (the NHBC's guidelines and tolerances) and below are a very small sample of snags (defects) we uncovered in brand new properties over the past few years.

Why the poor workmanship? The UK construction industry is facing a shortage of skilled trades. On top of that many developers (in pursuit of yet larger profits to satisfy shareholders) employ unqualified tradesmen and women on meagre wages.

Basin positioned too close to toilet (poor access)

Window reveal out of tolerance!

Large hole in marble floor tile

Wall not square

Floor not level

Leaking shower screen (and shabby sealant finish)

Poorly aligned sockets and switches

Wardrobe doors not flush with frame

Contrasting, non matching floorboards

Toilet flush (poor sealant finish to hide gap with wall)

Poor fitting balustrade (timber placed behind newel post)

Paving not flush with garden walls (mortar filled)

Protruding stair stringer on landing (still can't believe this one!)

Mortar missing on chimney (expensive repair once out of warranty)

Duct tape on ridge tile

Flashing on garage roof not chased into mortar

Worktop mitred (should be one continous strip)

Cracked floor tile

Poor finish around gas combi

Snagging

Guttering not attached to downpipe

Bare timber inside of keep (dust box missing)

Floor not level

Gap along newel post and handrail

Doorframe not made good

Poor varnish finish on door
